Sherri Smith talks about her process for writing the historical fiction “Flygirl” about a young black woman in 1940s Louisiana, who dreams of joining the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) during World War II. But she can only fulfill her dream if she’s willing to use her light skin to pass as a white girl.
