Because her father was a career Army officer, Author Lois Lowry grew up living in all sorts of places around the world. She born in Hawaii before it was a state and still a territory. When Pearl Harbor was bombed and her father had to go to war, she moved with her mother and siblings from New York to her grandparents’ small town in Pennsylvania—a town out of a Dick and Jane book, complete with white picket fences and puppies—then to Tokyo, then back to New York.
