At 17, Author Lois Lowry headed to Brown University to study writing. She loved college, but it was the 1950s, so when her college boyfriend graduated two years before her, she dropped out and followed him to California. In her late 20s, with four young kids, the youngest entering kindergarten, she returned to college and then to graduate school. She says that although she would not recommend her path to young people, she does not regret her choices, and in fact, believes she took her studies more seriously as an older student.
