Episode 1: What Is Trauma?

In the introduction to AdLit.org’s Trauma-Informed Teaching series, educator and author Ricky Robertson talks about the prevalence and long-term impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES). He also discusses different forms of trauma, settings where trauma can occur, and research related to historical and intergenerational trauma and resilience. In addition, he describes how culturally responsive instruction and support can affirm students’ generational resilience and the ways in which positive relationships with adults in the school settings can help students overcome toxic stress related to ACES, trauma, racism, discrimination, and marginalization due to students’ identities, as in the case of LGBTQIA+ youth.
