« Return to topic list

This 45-minute video is a thorough introduction to the challenges facing teachers of English language learners (ELLs) in middle and high school.

Dr. Deborah Short, a Senior Research Associate for the Language Education and Academic Development division of the Center for Applied Linguistics, discusses how to teach content to late-entry ELLs and how to ensure reading comprehension for success in the content areas. Dr. Short also reviews effective instructional strategies and explains why "newcomer schools" are effective in preparing ELLs for the challenges of grade-level academic content.
